X-Tinguish® Aerosol Fire Suppression Systems for Wind Turbines

Fighting fires 300' in the air in remote areas is a tough job!

Since the turn of the millennium, wind farms have continued to provide the world with an ever increasing amount of clean, sustainable energy. At the same time, the wind industry recognizes a growing concern in regards to fire safety. Fire represents a large proportion of all accidents in wind
turbines every year. The main causes of fire ignition within wind turbines are lighting strikes, electrical malfunction, mechanical malfunction and hot work maintenance.

Once a fire ignites inside a wind turbine, the situation rapidly escalates. In 90% of the cases, the fire leads to a total loss of the wind turbine or at least vast downtime that results in severe economic losses.

Designing a fire suppression system for wind turbine nacelles brings with it some unique challenges. The fuel load (polymers, insulation, cables and oils) inside a wind turbine nacelle can be extremely volatile. Highly flammable materials inside the turbine nacelle are packed in close proximity to potential ignition sources. High winds and openings can cause rapid escalation in incipient stage fires. The fire department cannot intervene because of the turbine height.

As the supplier /manufacturer of X Tinguish® fire suppression systems, Flame Guard USA offers tailored fire detection and suppression systems for wind turbines. Every fire safety solution offered by Flame Guard USA is carefully reviewed based upon effectiveness, quality, durability, consequential damages, environment, personal safety and costs.

Accepted by the US EPA as the first condensed aerosol to be listed within the SNAP program for Halon alternatives in 1994, X Tinguish® aerosol fire suppression technology offers the most efficient, well built and economical fire extinguishing solutions available today. Every X Tinguish® aerosol generator consists of a sealed, powder coated steel container. Each X Tinguish® aerosol container is engineered with the industries most reliable and efficient heat dispersion system.

Each X-Tinguish® generator has a very small footprint, is incredibly sturdy and are tested to withstand most rugged and severe environments with operating temps down to 65 F. X Tinguish ® units are unparalleled in structure and performance. An installation inside any wind turbine would not be as harsh as described, but at Flame Guard USA, all the engineering needed to succeed in any environment is built into every X Tinguish® aerosol generator.

When fire is detected, a X-Tinguish® aerosol systems triggers automatically. The aerosol agent is deployed as a very fine dry mist or cloud. The chart on page 4 demonstrates that X Tinguish® aerosol generators require much less extinguishing agent per volume to fully extinguish fires

USES OR APPLICATIONS

X-Tinguish® aerosol generators are available as electrically activated, manually activated and mechanically activated units. X Tinguish ® electrically activated units can be wired to either AC or DC power sources.

X-Tinguish® aerosol generators are small in stature and do not require any piping or storage canisters.

X-Tinguish ® aerosol generators can be installed inside any area within a wind turbine nacelle including the areas that house key features such as the generators, electric transformers with oil and inside any switch or control cabinets.

SMALL FOOTPRINT AND LARGE SAVINGS

X-Tinguish® aerosol generators require minimal installation expense. System maintenance is virtually non existent. Each X Tinguish® aerosol system produces its aerosol when needed internally. Given the lack of usable space within each nacelle and the need to reduce weight and size, each

X-Tinguish® system is the perfect fire suppression solution for every wind turbine produced today.
